Take Part in Firefox’s Goal to Set a Guinness World Record

Download DayYes! Firefox is planning to break the Guinness World Record for the “Most Software Downloads in 24 Hours“. I don’t really know if such a record exists but Firefox plans to break it anyway. Since Firefox is already a popular browser choice of many, this is quite a great marketing strategy to create buzz and promote the release of their newest browser version Firefox 3 and getting more users in return. Firefox is known to involve it’s users in the development of its browser and even in the release campaign. If I remember it correctly, they used a different approach when they released Firefox 2. It goes something like if you get a friend to download Firefox, your message to that friend will be included in the Firefox 2 Code or something like that. Maybe that caused Firefox to become such a memory hog in the first place ( just kidding).

Mozilla decided to place Firefox on a memory diet. The previous version of Firefox (Firefox 2) is reported to consume as much as 1 GB of your computer’s RAM. The browser is already out of the beta testing mode and in its RC1 (Release Copy 1) version. With over 14,000 improvements made in the browser, users can enjoy a faster and smarter Firefox.

The release date of Firefox 3 is yet to be announced. If you want to support Firefox in their mission to set the Guinness World Record for most software downloads in 24 hours, you can make a pledge by going to their SpreadFirefox page. As I am writing this, there are over 500,000 pledges made in the site. You can also tell you friends about it through their affiliate buttons (like the one above) which is available at SpreadFirefox.

Talk Binary: If such a record actually exists or not, I don’t think that they will have no problem winning it. Even if IE holds the largest share of browser usage,it’s not really downloaded, it comes with Windows, so the only competition for the record is Opera which is not much of a competition compared to Firefox.
