CodeOrgan: Play Music using a Website’s Content

February 23rd, 2010 | Comments Off | Posted in Cool Sites

CodeOrgan is unique application that converts a website’s content into music. It analyses the body content of any web page and translates that content into music. Using a complex algorithm, CodeOrgan defines the key, synthesizer, and drum patter that is most appropriate for the page content.

How it works:

The algorithm scans the page contents and removes all characters not found in the musical scale ( A to G). Then, it analyses the remaining characters to find the most commonly used note. If the note is an even number, the whole page is translated in to the Major Pentatonic Scaleof that particular note. If the note is an odd number, it becomes Minor.

The second part of the process is for CodeOrgan to define which synthesizer to use. This is based upon the total number of characters used on the web page. The algorithm chooses from a total of 10 synthesizer effects. A particular synthesizer is chosen based on the percentage of the content.

Lastly, CodeOrgan selects a drum loop based upon the Ratio of characters on the page versus the number of characters that are actually musical notes – there currently 10 different drum loops to pick from.

If you want to get more out of your favorite website aside from its content, you should try CodeOrgan. All you need to do is grab the URL of the website and paste it on CodeOrgan. Wait a few moments as the algorithm scans the site and hear it play the beat of the content.

Website Age Ratings for Parents and Webmasters

December 4th, 2009 | 7 Comments | Posted in Blog Tips

website age ratings logoWebsite Age Ratings is a website/tool that automatically gives a website an age rating. The rating will be based on the content found on a website. If a site contains content that discusses some form of violence and inappropriate topics, it may display a higher age rating. It’s a way of preventing children to wander onto site that may not be suited for them.

You can use the site for an instant website check for age rating. It will tell you whether a website is appropriate for minors. It will scan the website and generate a rating based on their criteria on whether the website is safe for a certain age. Web Age Ratings also checks how a website rates on WOT (Web of Trust), an independent website rating community that gives several information about a site which includes its trustworthiness.

Webmasters can also take advantage of the tool to automatically display the age rating on their web pages. All it takes are a few easy steps in order to embed Website Age Ratings on a website. Head over to their site and tick the appropriate web platform. You can choose from Standard HTML, HTML Fav Icon, Blogger and WordPress. Make a choice if you want to add a link to the “more info” page of your site’s rating. When everything is set, just click the “Get Code” button, grab it and embed it on your site’s page(s).

Website Age Ratings is one way of showcasing the trustworthiness of a website. It can also be used by parents to find out if a website is appropriate for their kids. The service is not 100% fool proof. Some content may escape them, especially the misleading ones. That being said, it’s still a pretty nifty tool that everyone can benefit from in one way or another.

Mobify.me: Create a Mobile Version of Your Website

February 9th, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in Design, Technology

mobify-meOptimizing a website’s landing page for mobile viewing is not an easy task. That’s what Mobify.me is trying to solve. They aim to provide an easy way for developers to produce a mobile version of websites in just a few hours of work.

This will allow you to make a faster loading mobile version of your website. You can choose which elements you want to include and upload custom images optimized for mobile viewing. This means that you can lower the bandwidth cost of loading your site on a mobile device. Resizing images is one way of doing it.

You can also customize your links, pages and edit CSS. Mobify also supports DNS redirects. This means that your mobile site will not lose its URL structure when you use your mobile URL (e.g.: http://m.yoursite.com). Mobify.me users are also provided with a JavaScript snippet that detects mobile devices which will drive mobile users to your mobile URL.

Mobile site (if it exists at all) is separate in terms of content management flow and URL structure, creating SEO challenges. Unless a site has a dedicated tech team or is using a framework with decent mobile functionality (aside from WordPress, there isn’t many), this is difficult.

Developing a mobile presence is a lot of work. Device detection, image resizing, content syncing… Mobile used to be difficult. Mobifying a complete site takes from 5 minutes (a blog) to several hours (a complex portal like TechVibes).

September 26th, 2008 | 9 Comments | Posted in Blog Tips

Most self hosted blogs and websites are on shared IP hosting. This means that you are sharing an IP address or one machine with several other sites. If you would like to check you IP neighbors there are online tools which will allow you to do that.

AbouThiSite is one of those web services which give you information about a website. It will give you the usual general information like IP address, owner, daily visitors, pagerank and language used. AbouThiSite will also give you information about where the site is hosted and the location of the host including the country and city of the server. It even displays the longitude and latitude of the server the website is installed along with a map. It is totally unnecessary but it’s still good to know. The service can also be used to check if a website does not comply with W3C standards.

AbouThiSite displays in list the domains which are hosted with the website that you are checking out. You can see the list on the lower left corner of the page. On the right side will be a form in which you can preview the IP neighbors of the website.
