Sagres Just Made a Website Out of Chocolate

June 20th, 2011 | Comments Off | Posted in Cool Sites, Design

Sagres, a leading beer brand in Portugal just brewed a new product: Sagres Preta Chocolate, a chocolate flavoured stout beer. What do they do for promotion? They create a website out of chocolate. They hired a chocolate artist, took photos, and use them on the website.

Read the story:

Without a TV campaign and very few print materials, Sagres challenged their digital agency to create an online activation for their new product. Using the website as the main promotional tool, Sagres needed to generate a lot of buzz with a new approach.

Given this challenge, the agency’s creative team believed that if Sagres made a chocolate beer, the perfect way to launch it was also to create a website made of chocolate.

This said, the first step was to find and hire the best Maître Chocolatier in Portugal. Mr. Victor Nunes, artistic director of Óbidos International Chocolate Festival, started sculpting the website live at this year’s venue. Later on, his artisan sculptor team finished it at their chocolate factory. The artists sculpted the entire website in chocolate pieces, moulding it according to the design provided by the agency.

Afterwards, at the agency’s studio, the chocolate frame and all the website components were shot in the different positions and stages.

These images became the raw materials for the website.

PageSpeed: How Fast is Your Website? – Learn How to Make it Faster

April 6th, 2011 | Comments Off | Posted in Tips N Tricks

PageSpeed is an online tool that you can use to rate you website’s(or webpage’s) loading speed. It fetches a site’s contents (HTML, JavaScript, CSS, images, etc) live, using a webkit-based renderer. It then runs the same Page Speed analysis found in the Page Speed browser extensions, and presents them online.

The Page Speed Score indicates how much faster a page could be. A high score indicates little room for improvement, while a lower score indicates more room for improvement. The Page Speed Score does not measure the time it takes for a page to load.

What’s neat about PageSpeed is not only that it tells you that your webpage has room for improvement, but it also gives recommendations on how to actually make those improvements. The color coded analysis corresponds to the same color of the set of recommendations.

Another feature of PageSpeed worth mentioning is its ability to give a mobile analysis for your website. With this feature, you can find out your website’s loading score on mobile devices and (also) give recommendations for improvement. Page Speed Mobile analysis does not use real mobile devices. It only emulates a mobile device and fetches a site with a webkit renderer found on iPhone and Android devices.

This is a very useful tool for web developers, bloggers and first time website owners who are looking for ways to make their site(s) faster.

CodeOrgan: Play Music using a Website’s Content

February 23rd, 2010 | Comments Off | Posted in Cool Sites

CodeOrgan is unique application that converts a website’s content into music. It analyses the body content of any web page and translates that content into music. Using a complex algorithm, CodeOrgan defines the key, synthesizer, and drum patter that is most appropriate for the page content.

How it works:

The algorithm scans the page contents and removes all characters not found in the musical scale ( A to G). Then, it analyses the remaining characters to find the most commonly used note. If the note is an even number, the whole page is translated in to the Major Pentatonic Scaleof that particular note. If the note is an odd number, it becomes Minor.

The second part of the process is for CodeOrgan to define which synthesizer to use. This is based upon the total number of characters used on the web page. The algorithm chooses from a total of 10 synthesizer effects. A particular synthesizer is chosen based on the percentage of the content.

Lastly, CodeOrgan selects a drum loop based upon the Ratio of characters on the page versus the number of characters that are actually musical notes – there currently 10 different drum loops to pick from.

If you want to get more out of your favorite website aside from its content, you should try CodeOrgan. All you need to do is grab the URL of the website and paste it on CodeOrgan. Wait a few moments as the algorithm scans the site and hear it play the beat of the content.

Website Age Ratings for Parents and Webmasters

December 4th, 2009 | 7 Comments | Posted in Blog Tips

website age ratings logoWebsite Age Ratings is a website/tool that automatically gives a website an age rating. The rating will be based on the content found on a website. If a site contains content that discusses some form of violence and inappropriate topics, it may display a higher age rating. It’s a way of preventing children to wander onto site that may not be suited for them.

You can use the site for an instant website check for age rating. It will tell you whether a website is appropriate for minors. It will scan the website and generate a rating based on their criteria on whether the website is safe for a certain age. Web Age Ratings also checks how a website rates on WOT (Web of Trust), an independent website rating community that gives several information about a site which includes its trustworthiness.

Webmasters can also take advantage of the tool to automatically display the age rating on their web pages. All it takes are a few easy steps in order to embed Website Age Ratings on a website. Head over to their site and tick the appropriate web platform. You can choose from Standard HTML, HTML Fav Icon, Blogger and WordPress. Make a choice if you want to add a link to the “more info” page of your site’s rating. When everything is set, just click the “Get Code” button, grab it and embed it on your site’s page(s).

Website Age Ratings is one way of showcasing the trustworthiness of a website. It can also be used by parents to find out if a website is appropriate for their kids. The service is not 100% fool proof. Some content may escape them, especially the misleading ones. That being said, it’s still a pretty nifty tool that everyone can benefit from in one way or another.
