Fuse Together Multiple URLs into a Single URL

May 9th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

FuseURL is a simple web tool that lets you create a single short URL from multiple URLs. What the engine does is it gathers all the websites that you have entered and lets you view those websites in one browser window or tab under a specially made URL and page for you.

To use the service, just place the list of URLs that you want to fuse and add a comment about the list if you want then click the fuse button. FuseURL will then create (as mentioned above) a special URL for you so you can share or email it to your friends. You will notice that the created fused URL comes in two variants:

The first URL will give you a page with links and comment (if any) on top. The viewer can then choose what URL he/she wants to see. Check out the sample in this URL: http://fuseurl.com/6x

The Second URL generally creates a single page containing all the websites you fused together. The sites are separated by forms where you can scroll and navigate from within. Check out the sample in this URL: http://all.fuseurl.com/6x

The FuseURL team is quite concerned with the security of their service when it comes to spam. This is what they have to say (via email interview) regarding spambots:

The goal is to keep Fuse URL service as simple as possible for users. We don’t require any registration or sign-in to use the service. If spambots becomes a problem, we will enable a CAPTCHA before submitting certain type of URLs. But before enabling CAPTCHA, we will try to detect spambots by usage ratios, no images access (spambots do not download images) and by using other known methods. We will also introduce a way to flag the generated links and preview the actual URL before accessing it.

FuseURL is a neat tool that you can use for creating shorter URLs out of different sites that you want to share. Instead of sending out a list of URLs to your friends, you can fuse them together into a simpler, single URL. If the service pushes through, we can look forward to a new level when it comes to managing our bookmarks.

The TinyURL Preview Feature

April 21st, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

As many of you already knew, TinyURL is a website that converts long URL’s (Uniform Resource Locator) into short ones which makes posting URL’s more convenient for the sender and recipient. Aside form effectively making extremely long URL’s short, what is great about this particular tool is that the created “tiny” URL will never expire. This means that you can keep archives or post it in websites and blogs without having to worry about your created tiny URL to cease functioning.

Another use of this service is the ability to hide the true objective of the URL that you are sending. You can easily surprise anyone with a website using this service. With all good things having its bad side, TinyURL can also be used to trick people in viewing embarrassing, annoying (Rick Roll Videos and the likes) and NSFW (not safe for work) materials which could get someone in trouble or cause a heart attack. The result of this is that people will become hesitant in clicking a TinyURL generated links.

The preview feature will allow users to take a peek on what is hiding behind the TinyURL generated link and what site does it link to or what kind of media (video, image, docs, etc). To enable this feature, just head over to the TinyURL website and look for the preview feature on the left sidebar and click the enable feature link (or head over to this link). Once this is enabled, every TinyURL link you click will redirect you first to the TinyURL website and give you an idea on what kind of site you are visiting. For this feature to work, your browser’s cookies must be enabled. This will allow your browser to remember that it should preview the URL coming from TinyURL first before jumping right into the link.

Watch YouTube in HD using a URL hack or Greasemonkey

March 7th, 2008 | 6 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

You Tube announced last year (November) that they started to test higher quality videos. There are now a few samples of videos in YouTube that are uploaded and can be seen in a higher resolution. The regular version of YouTube videos have a 320×240 resolution and can be seen now with an upgrade of 448×336. The audio encoding is also said to have improved from the normal 22050Hz to 44100Hz.

To watch the videos in a higher resolution, all you have to do is add &fmt=6 to the end of the video URL (so the URL will have to look like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnVJZkDuVBM&fmt=6 ). You will notice a slight improvement in the resolution. This upgrade doesn’t come without a price. The improvement in resolution will result to a slower download due to an increase in the size of the re-encoded video. To get a much higher resolution of 480×360, just add &fmt=18 at the end or the YouTube video URL. By doing this, there is a chance of getting an MP4-encoded version which also comes in a larger size. This trick does not work on all videos. It has been reported that newer videos can only be viewed in high resolution.

grasemonkey.jpgIf ever you don’t want to go to all the trouble of placing the code on every video you visit in order to view it in improved resolution, there is another way of doing this with the use of Greasemonkey Firefox extension. If you do not have Greasemonkey installed in your Firefox, you can download it here. Then, install the YouTube HD script than can be found here. By doing this, you can view all the YouTube videos that have higher resolution automatically. However, if you feel that it is slowing down your streaming or the videos stopped loading, you can always disable the script in Greasemonkey by pressing right click on the monkey head at the bottom of your Firefox browser and unchecking the YouTube HD tag.

Note: In order for all of this to work, you need to have the latest version of Flash Player installed in your system.

Update: Another trick that you can use in searching HD YouTube videos using the Google search engine. All you need to do is type in your keyword search and add the following parameters to your search query.

site:youtube.com “watch in normal quality watch in high quality”

Update: You can now view You Tube videos in 720p HD (widescreen) Just add the the code &fmt=22 at the end of the URL of any You Tube video uploaded with 720p quality. This will give You Tube users a whole new experience in veiwing videos. To embed videos in 720p, just add the following codes at the end of the URL on the embed code  &ap=%2526fmt%3D22.You can edit the width on the embed code to make it look widescreen on your site.

Check out the sample code below:

<object width=”425″ height=”344″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/tKySv27kT_A&hl=en&fs=1&ap=%2526fmt%3D22“></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/tKySv27kT_A&hl=en&fs=1&ap=%2526fmt%3D22” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”425″ height=”344″></embed></object>

Note: Embedding You Tube videos in 720p will slow down the loading of the video but it’s worth it. Expecially when viewed full screen. Embed the sample code above and see for your yourself.

Get Email Notification For Your Links

February 21st, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Cool Sites

linkblip.pngLinkBlip is a very simple webtool that lets you know who clicked the link that you just sent. Have you ever tried sending out one of those sites that scares the hell out of your friends? And when you ask them what they think about the link that you sent them they’ll tell you that they never clicked on it. Well, this webtool will notify you whether the link that you sent has been clicked plus it will also give you the time, city and the state they were when they clicked the link. Here is how it works:

Just enter the URL you want to track down and your email address. LinkBlip will generate a special URL for you which you are going to use instead of the original URL. Whenever someone clicks the URL that you sent out, LinkBlip will notify you through email. The recipient of the URL will never know the difference. This is also a good way to hide the URL that you are going to send out, for whatever reason you may have.
