Remotely Download Files to your Computer by Using DropBox and URL Droplet

June 30th, 2011 | 5 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

What do you normally do when you come across a file that you need to download while you’re outside? The easiest way to remember a download link is to save it to your email and download it later. But, what if you can save a lot of time (especially for large files) by downloading the file straight to your computer while you’re outside and check it when you get home?

By using the DropBox service and URL Droplet, you can easily copy a download link and let DropBox do the downloading for you. All you need to do is give URL Droplet access to your DropBox account, paste the download link to URL Droplet and the download will begin.

You can download from anywhere, café, office or a friend’s house and not wait for it to finish. You can even use your Phone to copy the download link, paste it to Save URL Droplet, close the phone and expect the file to be on your computer when you get home (provided that you left your computer open and online or).

Save the Developers Movement! Ditch Internet Explorer 6

March 28th, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in Other

save-the-developers.jpgThis is a call for help from web developers and programmers who are taking more effort and time in developing a web app or site just to make sure that it works on an outdated browser. I use Firefox and Opera browsers so I didn’t bother upgrading my IE to a newer version. When I tested this site in IE6, I found out that some of my png images are being displayed with black borders instead of the transparent borders blending with the background which is just one of the downside of using IE6 (didn’t get the chance to test in a lower version).

This campaign will result in former IE 6 users having a more enjoyable experience on the web while creating a less stressful and complicated environment for web developers by hastening the retirement of Internet Explorer 6. If this happens, maybe beta testing of certain web apps and services will be shorter and can be available to the public faster. Although, there are still a lot of people who are not too fond of this campaign, they feel that developers should do their job in making their apps and websites to work properly on IE 6 and other reasons are work related which makes them unable to upgrade their browsers (some are still using IE5).

Web developers and owners who wants to support the movement can grab a script from SaveTheDevelopers.org and put it in their websites which will detect if a visitor is using an outmoded browser. When and if IE6 is detected, it will display a pop-down window(like the image above) which will direct the user to a page where they can upgrade to IE7 or use other browsers like Firefox, Opera, Safari, Camino or Flock.

Export your Stumbleupon Favorites

March 23rd, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Tips N Tricks

Here is a nice web tool that lets you export your StumbleUpon Favorites into your computer. Instead of copying the links from your StumbleUpon account, you can import as many as you like using this tool. The guy who made this said that after contacting StumbleUpon a few times about an exporter tool, he didn’t get a single reply, so he made his own tool.

This tool will come in handy if ever you want to review your favorite links without going to your Stumbleupon page. You can also import it to your Firefox Browser’s bookmarks if you want to keep it there. What is great about this tool is that it sorts your favorite links into categories so you can easily browse through your stumbled links. Instead of browsing through your StumbleUpon pages which is sorted by date and time.

How to use:

Like in the image above, just place in your StumbleUpon username (no password required), and the number of favorite links you want to import. Toggle the check box if you want to group your exported links by categories (recommended). Then just press the Import Favorites button and it will start creating your file. You can save the generated page to your desktop or import to your Firefox browser.

Note:

  • In order for this to work, you must set your profile publicly. In your StumbleUpon Preferences under “Personal Information” in My Favorites”, choose Show Favorites to everyone. And under “Public Profile”, in “Share Favorites with Visitors”, choose show all favorites.
  • The exporter will not work on profiles that are “R”  and “X” rated.
