Midomi: Search Music by Humming

January 10th, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

midomi-logoDo you want to search for a song you just heard but have no idea of the title or who sang the song? Well, if you can hum or whistle it, then you’ll probably find it in Midomi. It’s a very amazing music search tool that lets you search for songs by humming, whistling or singing the music that you are looking for.

To search for music, just press the search bar and allow midomi access to your microphone and start humming or whistling. In order to search effectively, you must at least give a 10 second worth of recording. After your recording is processed (which takes about a couple or seconds), the music search results will appear.

Aside from being a cool music search tool, Midomi’s mission is to build the most comprehensive database of searchable music. You can also contribute to the database by singing in Midomi’s online recording studio in any language or genre. Midomi is also a social networking site where you can create a profile, song your favorit songs and share them with your friends and get discovered by other Midomi users. You can also listen to and rate others’ musical performances, network and buy original music.

Vloud Makes your MP3s Louder

January 1st, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Tips N Tricks

vloud-logoVloud is a simple web tool that you can use to increase the loudness of your MP3s. If you think that your Mp3 is not loud enough for you after adjusting the volume to the max, you can use Vloud to make the adjustment.

vloud is a free audio tool upload quiet mp3s, and get louder ones back

Just select the level of loudness you want and upload your Mp3 then download it back in its louder form. The intensity of the loudness upscale is not mentioned in the website. It just lets you pick the level by yourself. There is no added information whatsoever. The only way to find out is to test it yourself.

You can upload mp3 and wav files and make them louder. Each upload is allowed a 10MB file size limit which is good for high bitrate music files. I only did one test and it worked great. I didn’t get to test if it will allow you to reduce the volume of loud mp3s. Anyway, this might come in handy from time to time.

StreamDrag: YouTube Minus the Tube Music Streaming

November 5th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

StreamDrag is a simple service that you can use to stream music from YouTube videos, that is if you don’t want to watch the video that comes with the music. You can search for songs like you normally do by typing the song title or artist’s name.

First, I thought that it’s a service that just filters the video part which will let you just listen to audios, which means that you can listen to audios of any uploaded videos in YouTube. Well, it turned out that they also filtered the non-musical videos in YouTube and syndicated all the videos containing music for streaming.

You can save songs in their playlist but they only last until you reload the site. This means that the playlist is pretty much useless as of this moment. The streaming could use some speed, knowing that it streams only the audio. It seems that the streaming speed is just as fast as the original YouTube version with video.

StreamDrag is quite an interesting service and has a potential to be a good one. Proper implementation of the playlist and a bit more streaming speed would definitely be a great improvement. Syndicating music from other video services other than YouTube would also be a great idea. I don’t know if StreamDrag is worth watching out for. The service is practically in its alpha stages.

Two Reddit-Like Ways of Discovering Music

October 25th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

If there is a Twitter-like music site, then there’s also reddit-like social music voting sites.

CherryPeel

CherryPeel is one of those music discovery sites which mimic a social media site. The main page of the site lists the most popular songs voted by users. You cast your own (up/down) votes. You can listen to the featured tracks by clicking the play button on the left of the song title. To add a song to the bottom of your ‘current playlist’, click on the song’s title and select ‘add to current playlist’. You can queue up the entire page of songs by clicking ‘add this page to current playlist’. You can then publish that playlist which makes it available to everyone in CherryPeel.

The service is also equipped with social networking feature. You can invite friends to join and add other CherryPeel members as friends. You can join CherryPeel as an artist where you can submit your original songs or as a listener. Don’t worry signing up as a listener if you’re a bit shy to share your creations. You can always change your membership status if you decide to do so. The artist can also choose if they’d like listeners to be able to download their songs.

TheSixtyOne

The SixtyOne is another great place where you can discover music. It also functions like a social voting site. Like in CherryPeel, TheSixtyOne comes with genre category filter and if I am not mistaken, they also feature album art thumbnails next to the featured songs.

Playing a song is as easy as clicking the title of the song. You can easily add a track to your collection by clicking the favorite button. Some of the songs in TheSixtyOne can be downloaded, some you must purchase and others are just available for listening. Participating in the community will earn you experience points which are similar to karma points on other social voting sites.

Both music sites are a great place to discover new music. The choice is yours.

If you know of any service similar to CherryPeel and TheSixtyOne, feel free to add the link at the comments.

StumbleAudio: Stumbleupon for Music

July 26th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

StumbleAudio is the Stumbleupon for music lovers with over 2 million available tracks for you to stumble. Judging from the name of the site, the idea was generally taken from Stumbleupon. StumbleAudio is like the “I’m feeling lucky” of music search sites.

StumbleAudio does not function like Stumbleupon in every way. You do not need to install a browser plugin in order to use the service. You can do your music stumbling in the StumbleAudio page. This is managed by flash, since stumbling music is so much different from stumbling webpages and websites. It only takes up a small space and a little flash. You have to register for an account though in order to rate tracks and save them in your profile.

You can choose a genre that you wish to stumble. Once you start stumbling, a random music will automatically play along with some information like album cover, artist and of course the title of the song. You can also browse and play the songs in the stumbled album and rate the track according to your liking. A thumbs up and thumbs down button (Like in StumbleUpon) is used for rating tracks. There is also a quick share button which will automatically copy the track URL to your clipboard.

This is another great site for discovering music semi-randomly. A search bar is provided if you like to filter your stumbles by the keyword(s) you enter. The service also allows you to make quick purchase of the playing track from iTunes, Amazon, PayPlay and CD Baby. Check it out and start audio-stumbling.

P.S. And, yes, artists do get paid when their songs are played on StumbleAudio.
