Create your Own Branded “Reddit” in Just a Few Minutes

July 18th, 2008 | 7 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

We all know that you can easily create your own Reddit site using the “Create Your Own Reddit” feature. Mixx also launched a similar feature where users can create their own Mixx site. You can easily create your very own social news voting sites in the mentioned services without any technical knowledge whatsoever. A slight customization on both services is allowed which lets you enhance them with a bit of personal touch in your created social news site.

There is a new Company called Slinkset which lets you do the same plus a bit more. In Slinkset, you can place Widgets, Ads, and basically anything you can place in an HTML file on the sidebar. You can also customize the sidebar dimensions to fit your desired size for whatever you’re going to put in it. You can also place a custom domain name. Just create a subdomain from your original domain (news.yourdomain.com), add a CNAME record to your DNS provider and alias it to slinkset.com. The process is similar to aliasing a domain name in blogspot (blogger). This will allow you to brand your social news site and basically monetize it the way you want to, unlike in Mixx which only gives you one Adsense unit with shared revenues.

You can also auto-publish blogposts in your Slinkset account. Just subscribe to RSS feeds in your Slinkset account and each time a post is published, it will automatically be added to your created voting site. This means that you can turn any Slinkset account into a personal Reddit style RSS reader. When it comes to customization, you can only place a logo and edit the color schemes in your Slinkset site. The site is however still new and maybe we can see some improvements when it comes to customizing your page and adding widgets. A Blogger style in adding a CSS themes and drag and drop widgets would be cool.

The service is basically easy to use and no special coding is required. If you want to create your own social voting site under your own domain/subdomain, Slinkset is a great place to start.

Check out the sample I made. You can subscribe and make submissions too if you like.

Mixx Launches Mixx Communities

June 26th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Technology

Social media news aggregator Mixx recently launched “Mixx Communities.” It’s a Mixx extension where users can create a niche community site under the wings of Mixx. Members can contribute to the community by submitting their stories like they would normally on the larger Mixx community.

The created Mixx Community will be given its own subdomain. Community administrators can create their own niche topic tabs. This will enable content filtering for a smaller niche community. They are also allowed to customize the look and feel of the community site that they created. Administrators can personally brand their community site and insert their own logo, edit color schemes and post editorial content. They are also given the option to monetize their site by placing an Adsense unit (Shared revenues).

This is a great step for Mixx, offering its members to create their own niche social media community and earn a buck in the process. It’s like a BlogSpot for social media. Any member of Mixx can set up his/her own community. The setup process is quite easy that even a non techie person can create and customize a community in just a few minutes. Gathering members for the community is always the hardest part. Administrators can invite their Mixx friends to join in their newly created community and they can also send invitations by email.

With Reddit going opensource and Mixx making this community offering to its users, it would be interesting to know what Digg will come up with.

March 1st, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Cool Sites

Mixx is a social voting site similar to Digg which has been branded as the refuge of ex-diggers, but as the site grows, adding one feature after another, Mixx is slowly becoming the favorite of many. This just shows that these guys mean business in taking a share in the social voting network biz.

The Mixx team have been working on a Facebook App for some time now and if you are Mixx member, you should have gotten their email about the launch of this new feature. They have just announced that that the app is now up and running. You can now submit, comment and share content from around the web without leaving your FaceBook page. You can also set your FaceBook interests so that you’ll get the content you want delivered right in your profile page. They are calling this app the “Mini Mixx.”
