Mapnificent Calculates the Time it Takes to Get to Places

August 9th, 2011 | Comments Off | Posted in Technology

Mapnificent is a map service that shows you the area you can reach with public transport from any point in a given time. It is available for major cities in the US and worldwide.

How to use:

Simply select/ search an area that you are currently located or an area that you want to check out. By default, Mapnificent will display a highlighted area that you can reach by public transportation within an estimate of 15 minutes. You can expand the highlighted area by using a slider located at the bottom right of Mapnificent. Sliding to expand or reduce the reach will also adjust the estimated time to get to places within the highlighted area.

This great tool if you want to search places that are near, let’s say, your hotel. You can immediately estimate the time it will take for you to get from where you are to nearby places.

iMapFlickr: Create an Embeddable Customized Map of Geotagged Flickr Photos

December 11th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Design, Technology

ImapFlickriMapFlickr is a web application that allows you create an interactive map with geolocated images on it using the Google Maps and Flickr API. With this tool, you’ll be able to easily create something that normally requires a web developer.

The map only takes a few minutes to create. You need to find your Flickr Photoset(s). In order to do that, you need to enter one piece of information from your Flickr account. You can choose to enter the email address linked to your Flickr account, your Flickr URL or Flickr ID. Once your Photosets appear simply click the “Create Map” link on each respective photoset. Once the map is created, you can simply insert a small HTML snippet in your website where you want it to display.

This is the easiest way to create a custom Google Map(s) from your geotagged Flickr photos in a non-technical manner. Embed them in your website or blog. You can also share them on your Facebook, Twitter or your favorite social networking site.

Quikmaps Lets You Draw on Google Maps

June 28th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

QuikMaps is a map service editor with a few simple additional features that Google Maps can’t provide. It allows you to draw lines on the map, make scribbles and insert different markers. This is service not only helps users in providing geo locations (which Google Maps can do on its own), it also allows users to add more information in the map.

The editor is very simple and very easy to use.

  • To add markers, simply drag the markers to your desired location on the map and just drag them around to move them. Left click the marker to add information on that particular marker and Right Clicking the marker will immediately delete it. There is also quite a fair amount of markers and icon sets that you can choose from.
  • Drawing straight lines on the map is done in a connect-the-dots manner. Simply choose draw line on top to the map and place a dot on the point of origin and place another on a different location.
  • The Scribble tool is a freehand drawing tool. You can doodle and scribble to your heart’s content using this tool.
  • You can also add text labels on the map by dragging the Text Label icon to the location you want your text to appear on. To delete a text, just right click on the text and it will disappear.
  • They also released their API code to the public so developers can integrate QuikMaps to their web applications.

When you are finished with your map doodling and marking, just insert a title for the map, place some information if you like and save it. You can easily access the map again for editing. The map can be easily exported to KML(Google Earth) and GPX(GPS) format or you can get the embed code to place it on your blogs and websites. Check below for the sample I took from QuikMaps.
