Quixey: An App Search Engine that Understands You

October 21st, 2011 | 3 Comments | Posted in Technology

Where do you usually search for apps? Google? Bing? Yahoo!? – Or the native search engine of the platform that caters the apps? Well, you can ditch the search engines that I’ve mentioned and head over to Quixey. It’s your one stop search tool for any app that you’ll need. You can search for iOS apps, Andriod Apps, Windows Apps, Chrome Apps, Firefox Add Ons, Etc.

What makes Quixey different from your favorite search engine is that not only is it focused on apps, it understands natural language. This means that it will understand you and deliver the app you need. It will help you find the app that’s suitable for you, ranked based on their algorithm. You need not type the exact name of the app or keywords that describes the app if you’re looking for a task specific app for your needs.

How do they do this?

Quixey invented Functional Search specifically for apps. With Quixey, you do not need to know an app’s name or its official description to find the right app. Unlike traditional search engines, Quixey constantly scans blogs, review sites, forums and social media outlets to learn what each app can do and how people use it. Quixey uses this data to help users find the apps they need across all platforms. Since we have a thorough understanding of each app, Functional Search is not dependent on keywords.

Watch the short video to get a glimpse of Quixey in action.

The long video is from an interview by Robert Scoble.

BlogRadio: Listen to Any Blog Anywhere

June 1st, 2010 | Comments Off | Posted in Blog Tips

BlogRadio is a cloud based, streaming media for RSS. It simply means that you can listen to any blog that has RSS (which is almost all blogs). If you’re too busy to read your favorite blogs but still want to be updated, you can listen to them while you do your stuff. And it’s all for free.

How it works

You’ll have to download a desktop application which supports three major operating systems (Windows, Linux, Mac OS-X). Once installed, simply subscribe to your favorite blog(s) using the BlogRadio Desktop Manager Tool. BlogRadio will convert the text of the blog to an audio file for you. All that’s left for you to do now is to sit back and listen.

BlogRadio is an alternative way of keeping in-touch with your favorite blogs. If you’re too busy to read them, why not listen to them. You can choose a male or female voice to read for you and they are made to sound as natural as possible.

Blog Radio also has an iPhone app that allows you to sync your streams and listen (and view images) using your iPhone.

Yuuguu: Collaboration Tool with Multiple IM and OS Support

November 7th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

Yuguu is an interesting service with an interesting name. The name was derived from a Japanese word for Fusion. It’s a collaboration tool which functions pretty much like your normal IM client. The client is available for Windows, Mac and Linux (currently 3 distros are supported) which will pretty much eliminate some OS compatibility issues.

Recognising the changing world of work, Yuuguu came about as a solution to help people work together remotely, through any firewall, across different platforms, with as many colleagues as needed, just as if they were sat right next to each other.

Yuuguu features the usual online meetings, web conference, audio conference and web collaboration. The remote desktop and support is that most useful feature of Yuuguu. Imagine not having compatibility issues with screen sharing or desktop sharing software. Whether you are a Mac, Windows or Linux (Fedora, Ubuntu or Suse) user, you can collaborate with each other using the application.

Another useful feature of Yuuguu is its multi-IM support. By integrating your other Instant Messenger (IM) contacts with Yuuguu – you can share your screen, chat and work together without your contacts having to change networks or sign up to Yuuguu. Yuuguu supports group sessions across multiple IM platforms, so several participants on different networks can easily chat and join the secure conference or screen share.

Yuuguu is free to use and you can work with up to 30 people at any one time. If you’re going to use the service with more than 30 people, you have to acquire a pro account. This is a great application if you are collaborating with people using different operating systems.

If you are looking for other collaboration tools, you might also want to try DabbleBoard or Twiddla.

Type Mathematical Formulas with Ease Using LyX

May 7th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

LyX is an open-source document processor which runs on Mac, Windows and Linux. They called it a “document processor” simply because unlike most word processors, it encourages an approach to writing based on the structure of the document rather than the appearance. This means that you do not have to worry about the appearance of your document because the software will handle the details for visual layouts.

The software is free with no strings attached. Using LyX for typing regular notes and letters is as easy as using your favorite word processor. The main feature of the software is its ability to produce complex equations with ease while providing a professional look for the created document. It takes a little time to get used to and to learn the commands for the software, but once you get the hang of LyX, you can turn LyX into a very useful document tool. You can check out their video demo here.

LyX is a great alternative for your usual word processor and a great tool for creating documents that contains simple and complex equations. It is light and does not eat up a lot of memory and you can download it for free.
