StumblePics: StumbleUpon for Flickr Photos

November 20th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Technology

stumblepics logoHere’s a new way of browsing and viewing photos, through StumblePics. The service is like StumbleUpon but only focused on photos. StumblePics makes use of photos found on Flickr and can be viewed in high quality.

The photos that appear on Stumblepics are not entirely random like in StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon displays websites and images based on the categories that you provided. In StumblePics, you need to provide the keyword every time you want to use the service. This way, you’ll get to change keywords if you want to view a different set of photos.

From time to time you’ll get a message saying that StumblePics has encountered some trouble displaying the image and it’s probably Flickr’s fault. When this happens you can simply reload the page to get your chance to view the photo.

This is a great alternative in viewing Flickr photos based on tags that interests you. The great thing about this service is the fact that you’ll get the high quality image right away. You won’t have to browse pages of Flickr just to get to the high quality images that you are looking for.

JustResizeIt: A Free Image Resizer Widget

November 18th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Design, Technology

JustResizeIt logoJustResizeIt is a downloadable free desktop widget that allows you easily resize images. The simple widget runs on Adobe Air so there’s no problem whatsoever whether you’re using Windows, OS-X or Linux.

How It Works:

You can create widgets that define how the images will be resized. The best part is that you can create multiple widgets – one for each of your resizing needs.

For example, you can create a widget for sending photos in mail with a maximum size of 800 pixels. Or, you could create a widget for resizing photos to upload into a web gallery at 50% of their original size.

To use the widget, simply drag and drop photos from a folder into JustResizeIt. Wait a few seconds for the app to process the images and drag and drop the images again into an e-mail, office document or a folder. It’s so easy to use and hassle free that even a novice computer user who knows how to drag and drop will encounter no trouble at all.

Another great thing about JustResizeIt is that you can copy and redistribute unlimited copies of the software provided that you comply with their License and Agreement. As long as you don’t charge for the copy of the software, you should have no problem redistributing it.

You can also use JustResizeIt to promote your brand by redistributing the software along with your company logo. You can customize JustResizeIt to your company’s corporate identity standards and redistribute it. Simply contact the guys form JustResizeIt and get your custom widget. It is not entirely clear if they’ll charge you for the design – which is pretty fair if they do.

Navify: Enhancing Wikipedia with Images, Videos and Comments

June 4th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Technology

navifyNavify is an online visual encyclopedia that combines Wikipedia articles with images, videos and comments. This is a great place to start if you are doing a research about something. Instead of heading straight to Wikipedia for the text content, you can use Navify to view related images and videos about the article you want to read about. Comments are also allowed so you can read what people are saying about a publication.

Wikipedia is the choice site of many whenever they want to learn about something. What Navify does is enhance the content found on Wikipedia with related media that is available online. The service is also planning on placing a music player so that users can listen to full related songs and audio content. If you are not satisfied with what you find in Wikipedia, you might want to give Navify a shot for more content.

Instead of searching different sites for more images and videos about a particular topic, you can enjoy all of them in a single page in Navify. This will save you some time and will give you less distraction that other sites provide while viewing media that you are interested in.

Okimok: iPhone Photo Streaming App

April 29th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Technology

okimokOkimok is an online social photo streaming service that allows you to upload photos from your iPhone and share them with everyone. The service is for iPhone users only if you are going to upload photos, but non-iPhone users can also sign-up, follow other users and view their photo streams.

If you are expecting that Okimok is a photo host for your iPhone captured moments, you are mistaken. The service only allows you to stream up to 15 photos in your solo stream. Older photos will automatically be deleted to update your stream. The purpose of this is to see what your friends are doing right now. You can think of it as your most recent 15 photos stream update of your life. There’s also the combo stream, which shows the latest 30 photos of all the friends you’re following. It’s like having a personal home theater of your friend’s adventures.

Okimok is an interesting service for streaming photos and sharing them with your friends through your iPhone. Just be careful on uploading photos because you cannot delete individual photos. However, you can ask them to delete all your photos from your photo stream or just upload more photos to overwrite the previous ones. Have fun streaming.
