April 6th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Design

iconfu-logoIconfu is a free online icon editor that is combined with a collection of icons for you to choose from. If there’s a set of icons that you’re looking for but cannot seem to find, you can check out their collection or better yet, create your own using their feature packed editor.

Like any other editor, iconfu lets you draw your icons from scratch. They have quite a number of drawing tools and actions for you to choose from to make your icons look great. You are also allowed to upload your own image and scale it down to icon size. If you feel like editing the other icons that are published on Iconfu, you can also grab them and load them unto the editor.

You can also use the tool to make your icons animate. All you have to do is draw your frames on the editor, save, open their GIF animator, click on the frames in your version history and they will become the frames in your animation. To use this feature, you need to be a registered user of Iconfu. Creating an Iconfu account also lets you publish your icons and become a part of their community by suggesting blog topics and other resources.

Smirk: Video Icons for your Mood

September 23rd, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

Smirk is a simple and small service which allows you to create video icons of yourself directly from your webcam. You can then save those icons in your Smirk profile and share them with your friends.

Just head over to their site and you can immediately create your own video avatar. It just takes a few seconds of recording to create one. You can record a video depending on a mood caption available. You don’t have to worry about making mistakes when creating your video icon. You can replace a previously created icon with a new recording. However, I cannot seem to find a way to delete the icons that I’ve created. It seems that the only way to get rid of my silly face on Smirk was to replace the previously created icon with a blank recording. So, if you want your face removed from the service, just rerecord the video with your cam facing the wall.

Sharing is very easy, an embed code and a URL of your video icon will be available to you. You can also get an animated GIF version of your video icon for use as an avatar in forums and other services which allows animated GIFs.

Smirk is a different way of expressing yourself on the web. If you want to have some fun with your online avatar, better check it out.
