How to Always View YouTube Videos in HD

May 17th, 2011 | Comments Off | Posted in Tips N Tricks

This is a simple guide on how to make the most of your YouTube experience.

There are a couple of things to remember before proceeding.

  • First, you need to have a decent internet connection. If you have a slow internet connection and still want to view YouTube videos in all its HD glory, then fire away.
  • Second, you need to be logged in to your YouTube account. If you do not have a YouTube account, then it’s time to get one. This guide involves changing a couple of settings in your YouTube     account.

Now, assuming that you have a decent connection and you are currently logged in your YouTube account, you can now begin with the settings. I’ve provided some images to guide you to the process.

The first thing that you need to do is to go to your YouTube account page.

The next step is to click the Playback Setup which is located on the left sidebar of your YouTube account settings. From there, you can select/tick the “Always choose the best option for me based on my player size.” And select the “Always play HD when switching to fullscreen (when available)” tick box.

In this settings page, you can also remove the captions and annotations if you do not wish to see them while playing YouTube Videos, especially when being mesmerized by the HD quality that you are watching.

After making the right settings, you can now always view YouTube videos in High Definition and greatly improve your viewing experience in YouTube.

keep-hdThere are severalmany services available online that lets you download YouTube videos.  If you’re looking for a service that lets you download YouTube videos with HD quality, then you might want to try using KeepHD.

The service is nothing fancy. All you need is the YouTube URL. Paste the URL and hit Download Video. A thumbnail of the video will appear along with the list format you want the video to be converted. You can download the low quality FLV file, 3GP Mobile version, MP4 High Quality and the 720P HD goodness. Just click any format you wish to start the download.

KeepHD detects the available quality for each YouTube video. If the video that you are downloading using KeepHD does not have a HD version, the 720p link will not appear. This is to prevent confusion and wasted time downloading the wrong quality video. The service is dead simple and very easy to use which makes it a great app. Enjoy.

ShareView: Strictly HD

February 3rd, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

shareview-logoI just discovered this slightly new video hosting service called ShareView. It’s where you can upload videos in HD and watch them in HD and embed them in HD without losing quality. There is no option to watch them in lower quality. In YouTube, if you want to embed videos in HD you need to insert a special code in the embed codes that can be found in YouTube. If you are interested in them, you can check out the YouTube HD Hack.

Aside from HD uploads, ShareView also lets you add HD videos directly from YouTube and other video sites. All you need to do is provide them with the video URL and you can immediately grab the video from your existing YouTube account. The HD video will then be uploaded to ShareView and you can now share it in HD without switching to normal quality.

This is particularly useful if you want to embed High Def videos on your websites. Vimeo has HD but you can only view it in Vimeo. YouTube’s embed codes does not come with HD, you have to discover it for yourself and insert the codes manually if you want them embedded in HD. This site might not be for everybody and people with slow connections might not get the best of it but if you want quality videos, you should try ShareView.us. Plus their player rocks!

Watch YouTube in HD using a URL hack or Greasemonkey

March 7th, 2008 | 6 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

You Tube announced last year (November) that they started to test higher quality videos. There are now a few samples of videos in YouTube that are uploaded and can be seen in a higher resolution. The regular version of YouTube videos have a 320×240 resolution and can be seen now with an upgrade of 448×336. The audio encoding is also said to have improved from the normal 22050Hz to 44100Hz.

To watch the videos in a higher resolution, all you have to do is add &fmt=6 to the end of the video URL (so the URL will have to look like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnVJZkDuVBM&fmt=6 ). You will notice a slight improvement in the resolution. This upgrade doesn’t come without a price. The improvement in resolution will result to a slower download due to an increase in the size of the re-encoded video. To get a much higher resolution of 480×360, just add &fmt=18 at the end or the YouTube video URL. By doing this, there is a chance of getting an MP4-encoded version which also comes in a larger size. This trick does not work on all videos. It has been reported that newer videos can only be viewed in high resolution.

grasemonkey.jpgIf ever you don’t want to go to all the trouble of placing the code on every video you visit in order to view it in improved resolution, there is another way of doing this with the use of Greasemonkey Firefox extension. If you do not have Greasemonkey installed in your Firefox, you can download it here. Then, install the YouTube HD script than can be found here. By doing this, you can view all the YouTube videos that have higher resolution automatically. However, if you feel that it is slowing down your streaming or the videos stopped loading, you can always disable the script in Greasemonkey by pressing right click on the monkey head at the bottom of your Firefox browser and unchecking the YouTube HD tag.

Note: In order for all of this to work, you need to have the latest version of Flash Player installed in your system.

Update: Another trick that you can use in searching HD YouTube videos using the Google search engine. All you need to do is type in your keyword search and add the following parameters to your search query.

site:youtube.com “watch in normal quality watch in high quality”

Update: You can now view You Tube videos in 720p HD (widescreen) Just add the the code &fmt=22 at the end of the URL of any You Tube video uploaded with 720p quality. This will give You Tube users a whole new experience in veiwing videos. To embed videos in 720p, just add the following codes at the end of the URL on the embed code  &ap=%2526fmt%3D22.You can edit the width on the embed code to make it look widescreen on your site.

Check out the sample code below:

<object width=”425″ height=”344″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/tKySv27kT_A&hl=en&fs=1&ap=%2526fmt%3D22“></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/tKySv27kT_A&hl=en&fs=1&ap=%2526fmt%3D22” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”425″ height=”344″></embed></object>

Note: Embedding You Tube videos in 720p will slow down the loading of the video but it’s worth it. Expecially when viewed full screen. Embed the sample code above and see for your yourself.
