TypeFront: Font Host for Your Website

February 27th, 2010 | 10 Comments | Posted in Technology

Browsers have recently included downloadable font support. This means that web designers are no longer restricted to using default fonts in their designs. Now, browsers will be able to download any font and display it even if that particular font is not installed on the end-user’s computer.

TypeFront is a web font distribution platform for designers who are looking to take advantage of the new wave of downloadable font support in browsers. With this easy to use platform, a designer can simply upload a font that has been acquired under a web-friendly license. Upon identifying the domain the where the font will appear, a code will be provided that will allow the designer to call upon the uploaded font in CSS.

TypeFront supports TrueType (.ttf), OpenType (.otf) and Web Open Font Format (.woff) files.

This service is particularly useful if you don’t want others to grab your fonts from other hosts. Only the identified domain that you placed on your TypeFront account will be allowed to display the font. This will protect your font from being used by other websites without your permission. If you have spent certain amount of money to purchase the font that makes your website design rock, this is a good precaution to take to protect your precious font.

You can sign-up for a free service which allows you to upload one font with a 500 views per day limit. If that’s not enough for you or your website traffic, you can upgrade you font hosting plan based on your website’s traffic.

October 21st, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Design

typediaTypedia is a website focused on providing information about Typefaces. The community site aims to classify typefaces and educate people about them. Anyone can join the community to contribute information by adding and editing pages for typefaces. Together, they aim to make Typedia a shared encyclopedia of typefaces that provides content as accurate as possible.

The site is a like a mix between IMDB and Wikipedia, but just for type. Here, you can learn different things about typefaces. You’ll be able to get information about where they come from, who made them and why they look like the way they do. It will give you a deeper understanding of fonts and their history.

Typedia is also a great resource for designers in discovering new types of fonts. You can simply explore their pages and browse their listings. You’ll also be able to learn more about the anatomy of a typeface. Become familiar with the terms used when constructing and designing a particular type.

The most important part of the Typedia is the community. The members, along with the creators of the site, are the ones who provide us with the useful information about typefaces. The collaboration and information sharing amongst the members is what makes community powered sites like these a success. Whether you are someone with a passion for fonts, a designer or simply someone looking for a new typeface – your opinions and contributions will surely make a big difference.

Flipping Typical: What The Fonts Installed In Your Computer Looks Like on Your Browser

March 24th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Design

Flipping Typical is an online tool for exploring the popular typefaces you have on your computer. If you get tired of browsing for fonts that you are going to use for your next online project, it might be a good idea to pay Flipping Typical a visit.

Once you land on Flipping Typical’s site, it will immediately detect the popular fonts that are installed in your computer and display the name of the font and their respective typefaces. Just click the fonts to flip and view the large version. If you have other fonts installed but did not find them in Flipping Typical and want to view them using the tool, you can simply type the name of the font on the topmost black area of Flipping Typical and watch your font get added to the list. There are also two keyboard shortcuts that you can use (control-b=bold, control-i =italics) to test how the fonts will look like in bold and italic.

You can use Flipping Typical to view the fonts that are installed in your computer and see what they look like when on your browser. This is a great tool for web designers. It works faster than changing the fonts in Photoshop and uploading them to your web host just to see if it will blend with your website.

Wait a second, this is in my web browser, how do you know what fonts i have installed!?!

We create some hidden elements and measure them before and after changing their font-family. It turns out that this isn’t a new idea.
