FileSwap: Give a File Get One Free

January 5th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Cool Sites

fileswap-logoFileSwap is a file sharing service which is done in a unique fashion. It functions as a place to exchange files. The only difference is that the file that you receive is a surprise. It’s a fun way of sharing files and getting them. It’s a give and take deal.

File-swap.com is meant to be fun. It acts as a big black box. You put in one file and you will receive a different file in exchange which someone swaped earlier. If many users swap cool files many other users recieve cool files.

The current file size limit is only 500KB which is big enough for a decent holiday photo or a resized artwork that you made in Photoshop or other image editors. Aside from image files, you can also send text files, PDFs and audio files. Archives (Rar, Zip files) and executable files are not allowed. You can also rate the files that you receive whether it is good or bad. This will determine if the file is worthy of sharing or not.

To be able to download files from FileSwap, your web browser has to support Javascript and Session Cookies (cookies which expire as soon as you close the web browser). If one of these is not enabled you will not be able to download anything.

This is a cool and fun way to share your files with others. Getting something unexpected is the fun part.

Simple File Hosting with 10GB Upload Size Limit

September 6th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

FileSavr is a simple service with a simple goal. That is to offer a simple file hosting and if you have a file as big as 10 Gigabytes to upload and share, you won’t have any problems with FileSavr. No registration is needed and you can upload right away as soon as you step on their homepage, although I see a sign up link in their homepage that displays a coming soon message when you click it.

Unlike the other sites, we do not force users to sign up for paid accounts to download files, we do not show long countdown timers, pop up ads, or any other spam related activities

This is a great alternative to file sharing sites such as RapidShare and other popular file hosting sites out there. They promise to keep your files until forever as long as they are being downloaded. I just have no idea on for how long they are going to keep your files if they have no download activity.

Backup to Email: Useful Backup Tool for your Files

March 10th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

backup-screenshot.pngBefore proceeding, I would like to remind you that this application works only on Windows operated machines, even though the Linux guys will have no trouble running this app. This particularly small (1.69MB) but useful application will help you backup any file or folder to your email as easy as right clicking your file and then performing the backup. What makes this even cooler is that you don’t have to worry about splitting your files in order to do the backup. Backup to Email will do the split for you if you exceed the 10MB file size limit. Backup to Email can also merge it back together if you want your files to be in its old self again.

Backup to Email is very easy to setup. Download the application here, install and configure. I would recommend on using a Gmail account for your backups for it gives you unlimited space. You can use your existing gmail address or create a new one just for storage purposes. If you are going to use Gmail, just place in the email address that you want to send your files to and the sending email address (which can be the same email) , the outgoing server  (smtp.gmail.com), place a check on both check boxes )for SSL and Requires Authentication ), and key in your Gmail username and password. If you put a check on the “Ask for target email every Backup to Email” box the app will ask you which email are you going to put the file. This works well if you have multiple email accounts configured in your Backup to Email app. If you don’t want to be bugged by the software every time you do a backup, just leave the box unchecked.

This is a handy app that can be useful and will save you time in backing up your files in case something bad happens to your PC. You can also make use of this to easily forward large attachments by taking advantage of the auto splitting feature for files greater than 10MB.
