DropDo: A Minimalist File Sharing Service

May 16th, 2011 | Comments Off | Posted in Technology

DropDo is a minimal and easy to use file sharing service that lets you upload files with up to 25MB in size. Talk about minimal. However, the great thing about this particular file sharing service, is that aside from the usual file sharing feature that allows you to send the uploaded file links to your friends, you can also view the files without actually downloading them first.

You can share images, document files, codes, PDF, Audios, videos and Markdowns on DropDo. Even if the 25MB limit is a bit low for file sharing, and the security is not that great on straightforward sharing services, DropDo is still useful in forwarding documents that does not require any security whatsoever. The online file viewing makes it more convenient, if not faster, to share than other services with similar functions.

Dropdo is most useful when sharing music and short videos with your friends.

Registration in Minus is optional. You can immediately share a file upon dragging it to the minus interface. However, creating a Min.us account has a few perks:

• You can have own Profile at http://min.us/u/yourusername.

All the uploaded files are kept indefinitely unless deleted by the user or if it goes against their TOS (terms of service). The size limit currently is 50 MB per item and there can be a max of 50 items per gallery. This may not be much as but it is certainly suitable for quick sharing images, documents and short videos. Plus, they promise to upgrade the current size and item limit in the future.

*Minus works on Firefox and Chrome browsers, and supports Windows, Mac, Linux and Android operating systems. (iOS and Blackberry support coming soon)

filesocialFileSocial is a new service that allows you to share files on Twitter. Several services have popped out that allows you to share images, music and videos on Twitter. Now, you can share any file type there is through your Twitter account.

Whenever you upload a file, you can include a brief description or comment and a “tweet.” The message will appear on Twitter along with the link to the file. When the user clicks the link, the download page for the file will appear. Users can download the file and make comments about it on FileSocial. The comments you send or receive through FileSocial will automatically appear as @reply in Twitter.

You can upload Images, compressed files, videos, music, etc in FileSocial and share them on Twitter. The service makes no exception except for the size. You are only allowed to upload files not exceeding the 20MB limit (so much for uploading HD movies :D ) . If you can upload it, you can share it. FileInAFlash: Easy Browser Based File Sharing

April 3rd, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Tips N Tricks

fileinaflashFile in a Flash is a way for you to send files through the browser. The sender and receiver of the file need not install a client for the file transfer. There are several ways for you to send files to friends and co-workers. You can send files by email, send through IMs or using other file transfer clients such as BitTorrent clients.

What FileinAFlash does is act as a file transfer client for the sender and receiver. The sender of the file can easily select the file he/she wants to send directly from the FileinaFlash website. There is no need to install a plugin or download anything for this to work. A special download URL will be created for that user to share with the receiver of the file. Upon landing on the created URL, the receiver of the file will then be asked if he/she wishes to accept the file transfer. Once the accept button is pressed, the file transfer will begin on both sides. When the transfer is completed, the download URL cannot be accessed anymore.

This is a great way to quickly share files. I am not sure the file size limit of for the service but it seems that FileInAFlash doesn’t do any buffering. This simply means that they don’t save a copy of your file on their servers and time of the transfer will depend on the sender and receiver’s internet speed. It may not be for mass file sharing but it’s still worth a bookmark for those one time file requests from friends.

Share.it: Temporary File Sharing Tool

December 31st, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Tips N Tricks

shareit-logoShare.it is a file hosting site which allows you to keep the files that you want to share online as long as it is active. Meaning, as long as there is somebody downloading your file, it will be kept in Share.it’s database.

The files that you upload in Share.it will be given a grace period of 15 (fifteen) days of inactivity and has a limit of 100MB in size. Upon reaching the number of days of being inactive, the file that you have uploaded using Share.it will automatically be deleted. I call it a temporary file sharing tool because of the expiration period.

Upon uploading your file, you will be given the file URL and two embed codes that you can use for websites and forums. There is also an email tool so that you can let your friends know about the file through email. Social buttons are also available so you can easily share the download page to social networking friends.

This can be used in uploading files that aren’t too important and sharing them to a group of people. Once everybody who needs to download it is finished, you can just leave it be. If the link was made public and other people wishes to download the file(s), they may of course do so. Once the file’s download popularity is gone, it will be removed from the server. Just like a disposable storage device.

2Big2Send: Send Large Files

October 6th, 2008 | 7 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

2Big2Send is another file hosting site where you can store large files and send them to friends. The free service will give you 1 GB of disk space and 1 GB of download bandwidth per month. If you need a larger one, you need to purchase a premium account. The free account will give you enough space to store medium size files that are too large to share through emails.

Sharing is very easy using 2Big2Send.  All you have to do is enter your recipient’s email address as if you’re sending an email with a large (or small) file attached. The recipient will then receive an email containing a link to the download page for the file that you have sent. You (the sender) can be notified through email when the file has been sent and collected. This will make it easier for you to know whether the file that you sent reached the recipient without expecting an email telling you that he/she got the file.

There is also an available desktop client for easier uploads. If you are going to be using 2Big2Send frequently, the desktop client will make your life a lot easier.
