How To Copy and Move Files Faster on Windows 7

April 22nd, 2011 | Comments Off | Posted in Tips N Tricks

There’s no actual tweak for this one. In order to make Windows 7 (also Vista and XP) copy files faster, all you need is this lightweight software called TeraCopy. It’s a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed while providing the user with extra features to boot.

What makes TeraCopy worth the download?

• Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives.

• Pause and resume file transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.

• Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skip the file, not terminating the entire transfer.

• Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files.

• Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual.

• Full Unicode support.

• Windows 7 x64 support.

• Free

TynT Tracer: Track Which Content is Being Copied From your Website

March 2nd, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Blog Tips

tynt-logotynt-tracerTracer is a very useful and amazing tool that you can use to keep track of your content and see what goes on with your site. It will act like your personal big brother tool for your website. What it does is it tracks which of your content is being copied and it will tell you which part (paragraph, sentence, word, image) got copied and display them in real time.

The Tracer monitor records a user’s action each time content from your website or blog is highlighted or copied. The recorded data will then be displayed on your Tracer dashboard. You can then use the data to keep track of what your visitors/users are interested in and create a targeted content based on user activity.
How it works.

After signing up, you will be asked to place the Tracer code on your website. That code will be linked to your Tynt Tracer dashboard so that it can monitor the site activity. Once the code is installed, you will notice that whenever you highlight at part of your website, a loading action is performed. Just look at the top of your page tab and you will notice that the loading indicator activates.

If you want to find out which part of your content got copied, just click it from your Tynt Tracer dashboard and it will take you to the page where the action was made and Tracer will highlight the part of the content that was taken.

There is another feature of Tynt Tracer that should not be left unmentioned. I think this one will please most bloggers. Every time content gets copied and pasted on emails, IMs, blogs, websites or social networking sites, Tynt Tracer will automatically add an attribution link going to your site/page, along with the copied content. This feature only works when a certain number of words are copied. Copying a single word or a phrase and embedding the link can be very annoying to users especially if they’re just copying them just to make a search. I’m not sure if this works on automated content scrapers because they usually go for RSS feeds but it’s still a great feature.

This provides return traffic to your site when your content is shared without your knowledge while maintaining a consistent user experience. You can’t stop users from copying off your site but you can make the pasted content your virtual ambassador!

If you’re interested in finding out what goes on in your website, give Tynt Tracer a shot and learn more about your users.

Control C: Copy Paste Social Networking Site

January 31st, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

controlc.jpgControl C is a combination of a web- app and a social networking site that makes copying and archiving and sharing web content easier. All you have to do is install the software (which takes only a few seconds), login to the Control C program, and everything that you copy/cut will be stored in your Control C online account.

The service is so simple that makes you think about its usefulness. Simple it may be, Control C can prove to be a very useful web tool for everyone (unless you have lots of super secret documents). If bookmarking is not enough for you and you only want a portion of the article then all you have to do is highlight that portion and press away Ctrl-C. You don’t even have to open a document application to save your copied content. It’s like having an extra clipboard in your computer that lets you access all those cut and copied text. Control C can also double up as a bookmarking site, saving a URL is just a Ctrl-C away.

What is also great about the site is it is open source. It is expected to see other developers to make variations and improvements to the service.

Since Control C is not only limited to copying content on web pages and browsers (Control C works on any application e.g. Word, notepad, etc), security might be a concern for people who do a lot confidential work on their computers. In regards with the security issues, Control C’s main focus is the security of the data. The every time a copy is initiated, it will have the mark of private and will only be readable to you, the user have the option if he/she wants to show it to the public.

How many times have we copied personal information like credit card numbers and passwords to be pasted on other documents or forms? The company said that they spent almost half of the development time that went into Control C was to make sure that under no circumstance can private data ever be exposed, via SQL injections, XSS, or even someone breaking into the datacenter and stealing the servers with the data on them.

What we do is we 2 way encrypt all private data with a unique key, per user- that’s based off of their plain text password (which we do not store anywhere, only a md5) – Because we do not store this variable (and you enter it when you want to view sensitive items) even if a attacker was able to ‘hack’ a server, the data would be safe. I suppose most startups wouldn’t bother acknowledging that its possible a website can be hacked, as it would make them feel ‘amateur’ but it definitely feels important enough to put out there how we secure data.

Control C is still in private Beta and is available only by invites. If you want to check out the site, I have five invites and don’t mind sharing them with you. Just post it in the comments if you want one.
