ToRead: Bookmark to Email

September 18th, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

ToRead is a simple but extremely useful email-based bookmarking service. Registered users can easily bookmark any page on the web and send it directly to the user’s email for later reading. The service is free. Registration and practical application is very easy to accomplish.

To register, just hand them your email address and verify it. You will be redirected to a page where you get a bookmarklet which you will of course use for bookmarking. You can select from two of the bookmarklets available. [toread] will simply bookmark a page then send it to your email and the [toread+] bookmarklet will bookmark a page and allow you to comment on that page. Whichever you choose is totally up to you. Just drag one or both of them to your browser’s bookmark toolbar.

What makes ToRead even more useful is that when you bookmark a page, it doesn’t only send you a link/URL of the bookmarked page, it also delivers the cached page (including images) that you bookmarked. This way, you don’t have to go to the link if you don’t want to. You can just read the whole stuff straight from your email. Online bookmarking shortcuts are also available so you can bookmark the emailed link to your favorite online bookmarking site if you wish to. ToRead is a very useful bookmarking tool. If you prefer to get your bookmarks emailed to you, then ToRead is the right tool for you.

Later This Bookmarking Service

June 11th, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

LaterThis is another bookmarking service which lets you easily bookmark a page for later viewing. The service is very simple and works with any browser. No installation is required and the interface is clean, clutter free and very minimal. It is a great alternative to other bookmaking services if you are looking for something fresh.

To use the service, simply drag the LaterThis bookmarklet to your bookmark toolbar and then you can start bookmarking. Another bookmarklet (my LaterThis) is available so you can easily access your saved links. Bookmarking using LaterThis is just like using other popular bookmarking services out there. Click the bookmarklet and it will forward you to the bookmark page. You can place a comment for that particular link and add tags to easily search your bookmarks in the future. After saving your link, LaterThis will bring you back to the original page you are browsing.

The service also provides a small screen shot of the bookmarked page for visual reference. You can mark a link with a star to add it your favorite links. A date and time is also provided along with the links to show when you made the bookmark. You can easily mark a link as read and delete it if it has served your purpose. LaterThis also allows you to share your LaterThis saved links to del.ico.us. LaterThis does not have a social networking feature. Its main purpose is for you to access a saved link for later viewing. Simple as that.

Tip: You might also want to try alternative bookmarking services like  Mento or Netrocket.

Mento: A Fresh New Bookmarking Service

May 14th, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

There are lots of link sharing sites out there but Mento thinks that it could be better and simpler for users. Mento provides a lightweight, non-intrusive solution for easy bookmarking, sharing and tagging.

To use Mento, just register and download the Firefox or Internet Explorer extensions, or use their bookmarklet which works on all browsers. When you click the bookmarklet or Mento button, a small popup window will appear asking which Mento service you would like to use. The send feature will allow you to send the links (along with images and comments) to your Mento friends, groups, tags or email buddies. The save feature will generally save the link to your mento profile allowing you to place tags, images and notes along with the link. The reply feature will allow you to comment on the link(s) provided that it has already been saved by somebody in your network. This will also keep track of the linking activities of your Mento friends whether they have previously saved a particular link which will prevent duplicate link sharing in your network. The site also keeps track on how many times a link you’ve shared has been clicked, and which members have clicked it.

Mento also offers outside link sharing by allowing you to publish links to del.icio.us, FriendFeed, Magnolia, Tumblr, and Twitter. They also have a Facebook app that allows friends to view and comment on your links without having to install the application themselves. You can also use the AddThis widget to publish your links on other bookmarking sites. Talk about not being selfish.

Mento is another addition to the numerous social bookmarking services in the internet. The site is fresh looking and packed with sharing features which are also user friendly. If you are in the market for an alternative bookmarking service, Mento is definitely worth checking out.
