The Animation in this Video was All Made Using Photoshop

April 28th, 2011 | Comments Off | Posted in Design

This video ad’s animation for Method Cleaners, whether you believe it or not, was produced entirely in Photoshop.

Our original plan: traditional animation in flash, still art in illustrator. Boy did that change. As we went through look development, everyone was feeling the wonkier hand drawn feel. Goodbye Illustrator. As we talked through the pipeline process with our new animator buddy Ben, he suggests “just do it ALL in Photoshop”. With a flurry of keystrokes, the animation timeline was opened, and we were animating… right there… all in one program. ZOMG.

It was a little slow at first, and the PS timeline is super NOT intuitive. But once you get over the obvious missing features, its pretty sweet. It definitely simplified our lives.

Not to spoil any secrets here, but we’re not doing anything particularly fancy in this project. The puppet tool was our greatest ally. As an extra bit of stylistic whiz bang (mostly to hide our limitations), we created a “2line” asset for every piece of art that was to be animating.

That means, tracing every piece of flat work twice so there’s a little bit of wobble in the line work. We held these alternating drawings on 4’s so it didn’t get too flashy. As we animated our parent/puppet tool rigs, we de-smoothed the animation so it held on 2’s to give it more of a limited animation look and feel.

RateMyAnimations: Draw, Animate, Share

February 23rd, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Cool Sites

ratemyanimationsRateMyAnimations is a community powered site where you can create animations and share them anywhere. If you’re familiar with Rate My Drawings, a really cool drawing community with a great online drawing tool and a rocking share widget that displays an animation of the drawing being created right from where the artist made the first stroke. RateMyAnimations is a sister site of RateMyDrawings as you might already have guessed.

Additional features for video editing are added to the RateMyAnimation’s editor. The animation tool is basically a tweaked version of the drawing tool found in RateMyDrawings. Since the site is a community for artists, the animation editor does not let you upload pre existing images. You must create your animation from scratch by drawing. It would be nice though if they would allow you to upload or integrate your work from RateMyDrawings. This will give RMD artists to experiment with animation using their previous creations without having to draw them all over again. Anyway, the animation editor is still on beta so there should be more features coming soon.

Animasher: Create Animation from Images

August 29th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

Animasher is a place where you can create animation from still images. You can accomplish this by just dragging and dropping images to a timeline. No need to use complex and expensive animation software in order to create your masterpiece. Animasher will help you reach your creative potential in animation.

It only takes a short period of time to learn the basics in using the Animasher editor. After watching their tutorial, I’m pretty sure that you’ll grasp most of the concept on producing an animation and using their editor. I already got the hang of it after a few tries.

Like in most online editing tools, you can either use their pre uploaded images or upload your own. Animasher also lets you add a recorded sound or voice. This will give the created animation a more personal touch.

Animasher is a fun way of exploring your creativity through animations. It’s no Pixar but it sure is fun. Enjoy animating.
