iPad2 Hack: Bypass iPad2’s Security Code Using the Smart Cover

October 22nd, 2011 | 3 Comments | Posted in Tips N Tricks

The iPad2’s smart cover just got a little smarter. The guys from 9to5mac discovered a security flaw in the iPad2. You can actually bypass the security code on any iPad2 by using the smart cover. All you need to do is activate the off screen (home + standby on/off) of the iPad2 without actually sliding to turn it off. The next step is to place the smart cover on the iPad, close it and flip it open and click cancel and you’re in.

The bypass procedure doesn’t actually let you fully use the unlocked iPad2. It’ll allow you to browse through the apps but not actually open them. The real security threat here is when you’ve left a sensitive application open when you locked your iPad2. If your iPad got unlocked this way and you’ve left your email, contact list, notes and other apps that the perpetrator could use against you, then you should be worried.

So, until apple updates this security flaw, the best measure that you can take is to not leave an app open when you lock your iPad2.

Quixey: An App Search Engine that Understands You

October 21st, 2011 | 3 Comments | Posted in Technology

Where do you usually search for apps? Google? Bing? Yahoo!? – Or the native search engine of the platform that caters the apps? Well, you can ditch the search engines that I’ve mentioned and head over to Quixey. It’s your one stop search tool for any app that you’ll need. You can search for iOS apps, Andriod Apps, Windows Apps, Chrome Apps, Firefox Add Ons, Etc.

What makes Quixey different from your favorite search engine is that not only is it focused on apps, it understands natural language. This means that it will understand you and deliver the app you need. It will help you find the app that’s suitable for you, ranked based on their algorithm. You need not type the exact name of the app or keywords that describes the app if you’re looking for a task specific app for your needs.

How do they do this?

Quixey invented Functional Search specifically for apps. With Quixey, you do not need to know an app’s name or its official description to find the right app. Unlike traditional search engines, Quixey constantly scans blogs, review sites, forums and social media outlets to learn what each app can do and how people use it. Quixey uses this data to help users find the apps they need across all platforms. Since we have a thorough understanding of each app, Functional Search is not dependent on keywords.

Watch the short video to get a glimpse of Quixey in action.

The long video is from an interview by Robert Scoble.

How to use Soluto

First, you need to download the software from the Soluto website and install it on your computer. When the installation is complete, you’ll be asked to reboot/restart your PC. Upon restarting, Soluto will measure the amount of time it takes your PC to boot and which applications are causing the delay.

You can now begin to manage your PC by accessing the Soluto application which you’ve installed earlier. You can choose from any of the following:

1. Chop Boot:

This feature will show you your current PC boot time and reduce it dramatically by removing unwanted applications that runs themselves when your computer starts-up. Soluto will show you which programs should be removed from startup immediately and which ones are potentially removable depending on your computing habits.

Soluto will show you the amount of time that a particular program consumes. This will help you to chop the boot time of your PC by removing the slow running programs.

To remove a particular program from running once your computer boots, simply click on the program on and select pause. This will automatically pause the program from running when your computer boots-up and make it faster. Or, you could click “delay” which will also speed up the boot time but will run the program just the same. This can be used if you don’t usually use a particular program upon opening your PC but want it to exist on the task bar just the same.

Whenever you remove or “Pause” a program, it will go to removed applications bar. You could always make them return to your bootup list by looking for the program and clicking In Boot.

2. Lighten the Web Browser:

You can put your browser on a diet by removing apps and plugins. Some of those plugins will connect to the internet upon opening your browser so you might want to remove them. Soluto will show you what plugins and apps are safe to remove and what are possible to remove. Some of these applications may have been installed by you unknowingly and some of them may have been automatically placed there when you installed a game or a free software.

The process of lightening up your browser is pretty similar to chopping the boot time. You can refer to the instructions above when you feel confused. If you look closely on the plugin when you try to click it, Soluto will display a description when available. This way, you’ll know what you are removing from your browser. Just the same, you could always return them to active duty by looking-up the disabled plugins list.

You can do this on Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer

3. Heal Crashes

If your computer crashes or one of your applications crashes, Soluto will monitor them and study those crashes and eventually find a solution for you. It takes time to fix crashes especially if you’re using new (updated) software.

Soluto harnesses the power of the crowd to learn which actions really eliminate frustrations and improve user experience, and leverages this user wisdom for the benefit of all PC users.

The superconductivity group at Tech Aviv University, led by Prof. Guy Deutscher, are studying the, yet unknown, mechanism of superconductivity in high temperature superconductors. They are also dedicated in making the amazing physics of superconductors accessible and exciting for young and adults through the unique and counter-intuitive phenomena of ‘quantum trapping’ and ‘quantum levitation’. Watch the awesome video below.

Just Beamit is a Dead Simple Drag and Drop Large File Transfer Service

October 18th, 2011 | 1 Comment | Posted in Tips N Tricks

Do you have a file that you’re meaning to send to someone but it’s too damn large for email? You could always use Dropbox and upload the file to your public folder. But, if you don’t have Dropbox or for some reason you don’t want to use Dropbox for sending the file, there’s always an alternative. And the alternative doesn’t always have to be that complicated. In fact, this is by far the easiest alternative to online file transfer programs out there – and it comes in the form of a web app.

The service is called Just Beam It. Like the name suggests, all you need to do is beam your file to the recipient. Seriously, just drag the file that you want to send to JustBeamIt’s website and it will create a private URL for you. Send that URL to your friend and wait for your file to beam itself to the other side. It’s that simple.

Step 1 (Click to enlarge Image)

Step 2 (Click to enlarge Image)

JustBeamIt does not host your file. Your file will not stay at JustBeamIt’s server. It will only serve as a gateway between you and your friend (sender and recipient). That’s why the sender cannot leave the website until the download is finished or the transfer process will have to be repeated, which will pretty much suck for both parties if the connection is severed. Either way, it’s still a great alternative to other file sharing apps (what other file sharing apps?). It’s dead simple and easy to use. It’s a web app, so no installation is needed. And there’s no need to register for an account or whatsoever. Just beam it baby.
