BoostCam: Disposable Video Conferencing Site

April 7th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Tips N Tricks

boostcamBoostCam is a service that provides free, instant and disposable two-way video conferencing. You can use it right away without installing any plugins.

To start your disposable video conference, just head over to their site and allow access to your web cam. You will be provided with a unique URL for you to share with the second party. BoostCam is a two way video chat service. If you want to have another video conference with a different user, you can open a new tab on your browser, and repeat the process. It’s like having a tabbed video conference using your browser. Just make sure that the other party is online and he/she must start the session as soon as possible. The page is set to expire after a few minutes of waiting for the other party to join.

This is a great instant service that allows you to start a video conference in a snap and also great if you do not wish to share your IM account. You can use this for short online tutorials that would require you to broadcast or have a video chat with your Twitter buddy without revealing your IM or email address.

FileInAFlash: Easy Browser Based File Sharing

April 3rd, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Tips N Tricks

fileinaflashFile in a Flash is a way for you to send files through the browser. The sender and receiver of the file need not install a client for the file transfer. There are several ways for you to send files to friends and co-workers. You can send files by email, send through IMs or using other file transfer clients such as BitTorrent clients.

What FileinAFlash does is act as a file transfer client for the sender and receiver. The sender of the file can easily select the file he/she wants to send directly from the FileinaFlash website. There is no need to install a plugin or download anything for this to work. A special download URL will be created for that user to share with the receiver of the file. Upon landing on the created URL, the receiver of the file will then be asked if he/she wishes to accept the file transfer. Once the accept button is pressed, the file transfer will begin on both sides. When the transfer is completed, the download URL cannot be accessed anymore.

This is a great way to quickly share files. I am not sure the file size limit of for the service but it seems that FileInAFlash doesn’t do any buffering. This simply means that they don’t save a copy of your file on their servers and time of the transfer will depend on the sender and receiver’s internet speed. It may not be for mass file sharing but it’s still worth a bookmark for those one time file requests from friends.

QuieTube: A Distraction Free YouTube Experience

April 2nd, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Tips N Tricks

quietubeQuieTube is a very simple YouTube tool. What it does is make YouTube video watching as minimalistic as possible, without any distractions. If you feel that the YouTube pages are very distracting, then you better grab yourself a QuieTube bookmarklet.

What the bookmarklet does is create a very simple page for you to share your videos. Just head over to the YouTube video that you want to share and click the QuieTube bookmarklet. A distraction free page will be created for you to share with your friends. Your friends can choose to view the page in a white or black background. A link to the original YouTube page is also available and a short URL for micro sharing sites.

QuieTube is a way for you to promote your videos in a distraction free manner. This will probably prevent viewers from leaving your video because of the related videos showcased on the pages. You can also hide all those negative comments on your video post by using the tool, unfortunately this is also true for positive comments. What would really make QuieTube a complete distraction free YouTube experience is if they remove the related videos from the player itself.

*Just be careful when sharing the wrong URL. They have this very nasty version of a 404 page with a Rick Roll video.
