TypeFront: Font Host for Your Website

February 27th, 2010 | 10 Comments | Posted in Technology

Browsers have recently included downloadable font support. This means that web designers are no longer restricted to using default fonts in their designs. Now, browsers will be able to download any font and display it even if that particular font is not installed on the end-user’s computer.

TypeFront is a web font distribution platform for designers who are looking to take advantage of the new wave of downloadable font support in browsers. With this easy to use platform, a designer can simply upload a font that has been acquired under a web-friendly license. Upon identifying the domain the where the font will appear, a code will be provided that will allow the designer to call upon the uploaded font in CSS.

TypeFront supports TrueType (.ttf), OpenType (.otf) and Web Open Font Format (.woff) files.

This service is particularly useful if you don’t want others to grab your fonts from other hosts. Only the identified domain that you placed on your TypeFront account will be allowed to display the font. This will protect your font from being used by other websites without your permission. If you have spent certain amount of money to purchase the font that makes your website design rock, this is a good precaution to take to protect your precious font.

You can sign-up for a free service which allows you to upload one font with a 500 views per day limit. If that’s not enough for you or your website traffic, you can upgrade you font hosting plan based on your website’s traffic.

CodeOrgan: Play Music using a Website’s Content

February 23rd, 2010 | Comments Off | Posted in Cool Sites

CodeOrgan is unique application that converts a website’s content into music. It analyses the body content of any web page and translates that content into music. Using a complex algorithm, CodeOrgan defines the key, synthesizer, and drum patter that is most appropriate for the page content.

How it works:

The algorithm scans the page contents and removes all characters not found in the musical scale ( A to G). Then, it analyses the remaining characters to find the most commonly used note. If the note is an even number, the whole page is translated in to the Major Pentatonic Scaleof that particular note. If the note is an odd number, it becomes Minor.

The second part of the process is for CodeOrgan to define which synthesizer to use. This is based upon the total number of characters used on the web page. The algorithm chooses from a total of 10 synthesizer effects. A particular synthesizer is chosen based on the percentage of the content.

Lastly, CodeOrgan selects a drum loop based upon the Ratio of characters on the page versus the number of characters that are actually musical notes – there currently 10 different drum loops to pick from.

If you want to get more out of your favorite website aside from its content, you should try CodeOrgan. All you need to do is grab the URL of the website and paste it on CodeOrgan. Wait a few moments as the algorithm scans the site and hear it play the beat of the content.

Youblisher is an online attempt to visually reproduce the experience of reading a book or a magazine in real life. Although it is not as close as reproducing the physical aspect of actually holding a real book, the result it gives is surprisingly astounding.

The service allows you to upload a PDF document or grab one online by providing a URL. All you need is an account and you can immediately experience reading an online document, Youblisher style. The visual reproduction of actually flipping through the pages of a magazine or a book is very remarkable. You’ll be able to flip pages back and forth as if you are reading an actual book with sounds to match.

Reading an actual book – the flipping of the pages with your fingers and holding its spine as you read is impossible to mimic online. What Youblisher has done is give us a better alternative in reading documents, books and magazines online.
