WordPress 2.5 Stable Release Up for Download

March 30th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Blog Tips

WordPress just released its latest stable version (2.5) and it is looking great. The new version is equipped with a new interface which I think WordPress users will enjoy. It takes a little getting used to with the with the new look, but you’ll get used to it in no time. What caught my attention is the ability to change and edit your pemalink for a certain post (see images). This will make your post URL more search engine friendly and you can edit it to what you think is the best for SEO. The add media function is also new where you can easily add images, videos, audios, and other media in your posts. All plugins that I have been using seems to work fine.

Write Post

Edit Permalink

Upload Media

To upgrade to the new version all you have to do is copy everything to your server except the WP-Content Folder. Copying the wp-content folder will overwrite your plugins and themes so you will be left with nothing. Backing up all your files is always a necessary precaution to make whenever making an upgrade in your host. After copying everything just login to your dashboard and you will be asked to update your WordPress database.

You can get the newest version of WordPress here or check your WordPress dashboard for the update link.

Note: If you are using the Zemanta App which I have posted a while ago, It is currently not working with this new version of WordPress (2.5). So we have to wait until they upgrade their app.

Get Blogging Suggestions for your Content Using Zemanta

March 29th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Blog Tips

zemantha.jpgZemanta is a new web app (still in alpha version) that lets you get suggestions for your content while blogging. As of now, they index around 300 top media sources and numerous blogs of their users. They also provide image suggestions for your content. The suggested images are based on the contextual comparison of your text and image description, title and the articles or posts they were used in originally. They currently get their suggested images from Wikimedia Commons, Flickr and various stock photo providers like Shutterstock and Fotolia. Link suggestions are also provided and even tags for your post.

The suggestion engine will start working after you have typed in 300 characters in your blog. It will analyze your post through their proprietary natural language processing and semantic algorithms, and then the engine will statistically compare its context framework to their preindexed database of other content. How to Use:

The service currently supports the Mozilla Firefox browser and is currently available in WordPress (supports both hosted and wordpress.com platforms), Blogger and Typepad blogging platforms. All you have to do is install the Firefox Plugin which is available in their site. Once installed, you will notice a small icon (will be activated when you start writing your post) addition on the right side of your URL bar, then go to the dashboard of your favorite blogging platform and start writing an article. When you get to 300 characters, the engine will start to work and will give you relevant articles, images, links and tags suggestions for your post. You can either visit the suggested articles through the link provided or click to insert them in your blog as related article for your content. If you find an image in their suggestion bar, just click on it and it will be automatically added to your post. The same procedure applies to links and tags suggestions.

This is a great way to find additional content for your articles. The service is very new and you can expect more improvements in the future when it comes to bringing suggestions and supporting other blogging platforms and browsers.

Save the Developers Movement! Ditch Internet Explorer 6

March 28th, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in Other

save-the-developers.jpgThis is a call for help from web developers and programmers who are taking more effort and time in developing a web app or site just to make sure that it works on an outdated browser. I use Firefox and Opera browsers so I didn’t bother upgrading my IE to a newer version. When I tested this site in IE6, I found out that some of my png images are being displayed with black borders instead of the transparent borders blending with the background which is just one of the downside of using IE6 (didn’t get the chance to test in a lower version).

This campaign will result in former IE 6 users having a more enjoyable experience on the web while creating a less stressful and complicated environment for web developers by hastening the retirement of Internet Explorer 6. If this happens, maybe beta testing of certain web apps and services will be shorter and can be available to the public faster. Although, there are still a lot of people who are not too fond of this campaign, they feel that developers should do their job in making their apps and websites to work properly on IE 6 and other reasons are work related which makes them unable to upgrade their browsers (some are still using IE5).

Web developers and owners who wants to support the movement can grab a script from SaveTheDevelopers.org and put it in their websites which will detect if a visitor is using an outmoded browser. When and if IE6 is detected, it will display a pop-down window(like the image above) which will direct the user to a page where they can upgrade to IE7 or use other browsers like Firefox, Opera, Safari, Camino or Flock.

Adobe Photoshop Express Goes Public

March 27th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

photoshop-express.jpgAdobe just released its online (and stripped down) version of Photoshop called Photoshop Express. From what I can see, it is online photo storage, photo sharing and online photo editing all rolled up into one. The service makes it possible to edit the uploaded photos and images online. You can upload of to 2 gigabytes of photos in one account. Being branded as a stripped down version of the desktop software, Photoshop Express mainly focuses in the mainstream market rather than professionals.

The service has seventeen editing tools for you to choose from. This includes some basic tools which include Crop and Rotate, Auto Correct, Exposure, Red-Eye Removal, Touchup, and saturation. Tuning features and Effects features are also made available. You’ll notice the absence of drawing tools in the service. This only makes it clear that the tuned down online version of Photoshop is only built for light editing. Layers are also missing which is an important feature of the Desktop software, but they have added an interesting feature to combat the absence of the layer tool. Every time you add an effect or use a tool, a checkbox appears on the side toolbar showing that you have added that certain effect to your photo. You can toggle the checkbox if you want to remove and add that particular effect in your photo which makes it easier to see the changes that you have made.

Photoshop Express is easy to use and it is free so you can sign up anytime. Aside from uploading a photo from your hard drive, you can also get your photos directly from your Facebook, Photobucket and Picassa accounts. This will make it easier for users to migrate to Photoshop Express without going to the trouble of downloading and uploading photos from another service to another. It would also be nice to see a Flickr, Smugmug, and other online photo hosting services integrate with Photoshop Express. Embed and slideshow tools are also available in the online service which supports its function as an image hosting/sharing service.

Secrets is an OS X application that lets you modify you OS X Leopard easily by using a simple and easy to use preference pane in your System Preferences. You can easily browse Secrets and choose what application you want to tweak depending on what is available for the specific application you have installed in your system. Instead of using code hacks you can just click on the application you want to tweak in your preference pane and secrets will do the rest.

Secrets requires OS X 10.5 or later to run. Just double click the preference pane to install it. Use the Reload button to get the latest values from the web. You can easily revert to the default value by hitting the X button (delete key). You also have to note that before changing values for a particular application, you have to quit that application in order for the tweak to work.

The app is available for download for free and you can also share your own secrets in the community discussions. You have to note though that if you use this improperly, it can seriously harm your system, so use with precaution. You may also want to read the comments and the discussions for new updates, errors and new solutions for a safer tweaking.
