Make3D Converts your Photo into a 3-D Model

February 29th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

make3d.pngMake3D is a web service that turns your single picture into a three-dimensional “fly around” model. This will give you a new way of looking at your photos. It will allow you to access a scene’s depth and a range of points of view. Check out the video below.

The service is free and you can upload a photo from your hard drive or Flickr account. All you have to do in order to upload a photo is to sign up for an account. After uploading your image/photo you can view, or in their words “fly” in the 3-D scene. To do this, you must use a VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) viewer or Adobe Shockwave. A rendered 3-D flash movie is also made available for you to watch if you do not have or don’t want to go to the trouble of downloading and installing the above mentioned software. You can also view your created 3-D model in high resolution movie in 3DS format (this feature is still unavailable at the moment). The fun doesn’t end in viewing your photos in 3-D. Make3D provides a code so you can embed the 3-D model in your websites and social networking pages.I have to warn you though that once you have uploaded your image, it takes some time for the program to create the 3-D model. The project is still in research stage and they are only using one computer for this which is most of the time is overloaded. But, as soon as your image is queued, you will be able to watch and download your 3-D model.

How it works:

Our software uses a breakthrough technology in machine learning. It estimates depths from the single image by using our monocular vision algorithm, developed in 2005. It captures a variety of monocular cues and learns the relations between different parts of the image using a machine learning technique called Markov Random Field (MRF). Our algorithm first divides the image into small patches and analyzes them at multiple scales to estimate each of the patches’ 3-d location and 3-d orientation.

We have applied variations of this algorithm for driving cars autonomously, for robotic manipulation, for making 3-d models of large environments, and for creating visually-pleasing 3-d throughs from an image.

For hard-core programmers, you can download the codes for the program that they are using here.

The Flickr Peep Show

February 28th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Cool Sites

images1.jpgHave you ever wondered what it would be like to take a peek on what people are uploading in their Flickr accounts? Flickrspy does that for you. There is not much to say about this site other than it lets us take a peek on the latest images that are being uploaded in Flickr.

I have to warn you though that this site can be addictive. You might find yourself staring at it for hours. If you happen to see a photo or image that you like, just click the image then you will be redirected to the Flickr profile of the person who uploaded the image. This way you can comment on the image or have a longer look at it. Some might find this site useful for gathering materials and ideas on whatever they are working on, while others might find this enjoyable and just look at the newly uploaded images. This site is so simple that you don’t have to do anything other than sit back and watch.

Google Talk Chatback

February 26th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Cool Sites

talk.JPGGoogle Talk has just launched a new feature which allows your web page viewers send instant messages to your Google Talk account. It’s named Google Talk Chatback, so-called for the reason that your visitors are also given the chance to talk back to you. This is by adding a small badge on any side of your web page, blog or any personal online profile which has a direct link to your Google Talk account. This badge shows your nickname and your status message. Your random web page viewers, even without a Google Talk account, will have a direct contact with you by sending instant messages on this widget. This is web-based so your visitors don’t need to download anything to do the chatting. It is most likely similar to one of the features of the GrandCentral (posted earlier), a webcall button, which is also added to your website or blog, the only difference is the the way they are being used, an IM and an VoIP.

chatback.JPGAll you have to do is set your status message (as to Available, Busy, or Offline or a customized status message) on the official Chatback page, grab the codes and add it on your website or blog. Now, chat and be connected directly to your viewers. Happy Chatback!

Get One Number for Life with Grand Central

February 26th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Cool Sites

grandcentral.jpgGrand Central is a Google acquired web app whose aim is to link your phones together and help them do more. They will give you” one number… for life” – this number will not be tied to your cell phones or your location – it will be tied to you.

grandcentralscreenshot.jpg

There are lots of cool features that Grand Central is offering:

  • You can check your messages by phone, email or online.
  • You can easily switch phones in the middle of a phone call.
  • Instead of deleting your messages in your phone, you can keep them online forever.
  • You can record your phone calls and store them online.
  • Click to dial from your address book.
  • Create a customized voicemail greeting for your callers.
  • Forward, download, and add notes to your messages
  • You can receive voicemail notifications via email or SMS.
  • Have the ability to quickly (and secretly) block an annoying caller. You can screen callers and hear what they have to say before picking up. This is made possible through the ListenIn feature. You can also blacklist a caller so that he/she will not bother you anymore.
  • Another cool feature is the ability to add a WebCall button to your website or blog for people to call you. Your number stays private and you can use all the normal GrandCentral screening, blocking, forwarding, and other features that put you in control. The WebCall button takes care of connecting the call to you after getting the caller’s number. You can use the WebCall button for constant updates on what you are doing. Just set phone forwarding on your WebCall button to go to voicemail (so your phone isn’t always ringing) and then update your WebCall voicemail greeting as frequently as you like. Callers will hear the latest message you have when they call and can even leave messages for you. Expect to see a lot of online marketers to utilize this feature in the near future. It’s a great feature to add to marketing websites to bring updates to users and potential customers.

Grand Central is new and only provides service in the United States and currently handles a few users. The company is growing and it is only a matter of time for Grand Central to extend their service outside the states. You can however sign up and have a number reserved for you. You will receive an email notification when the service is made available to your country.

Cookthink: Suggests Something Good to Cook for Your Cravings

February 25th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Cool Sites

cookthink.jpgWhat are you craving? What am i craving? That’s the most frequent question that comes into our minds whenever we want something to eat and very much undecided on what our taste buds really crave for? Well, Cookthink is here to make it easier for you and to help you think what you really wanted.

cookthinkscreenshot.jpg

Cookthink is easy. When you feel you really crave for something, just go to the website, and here, you’ll be suggested on something good to cook on. Finding a recipe works just fine. There are two ways to do it. One option is by typing any tag you wish to look for in the search bar located next to “I’m craving”, hit Enter and presto, the tag will be added to your “I’m craving box” on the right side of the page. Another way is by clicking the links located next to the search bar: Ingredient, Dish, Cuisine or Mood. A cloud of tags will appear right at the top of each link and you can select any of your preference depending on what you wanna munch at the moment. Clicking the tags will add up to your “I’m Craving” box on the right side. You can add up to 8 tags depending on what you desire to eat. Now you can click the “Cookthink It!” button and a suggested recipe will be displayed right in front of you. It’s just a suggestion anyway. However, in any way that the suggested recipe didn’t meet your craving standards, there’s an option above which will show you a bunch of more recipes. All you have to do is choose the most appealing one to you.

Another good thing here is you can save any recipe you have chosen by adding it to your “Meal Builder.” It is an option where you can save and access all the recipes that catches your attention and makes you crave for more. Try and see for yourself. I have joined this community and it serves me right.
